“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.”
When I saw this, all that went through my head was, “Was Socrates a prophet? Did he prophesy this?”. It’s hard to imagine that our ‘goody goody’ parents and grandparents who always came first in primary and secondary school, extol the virtues of respect and hardwork and preach the importance of good manners were the generation Socrates was talking about. It seems like he’s talking about our present generation, doesn’t it? Well, I guess there really is nothing new under the sun, now is there?
